The deceased of a mother aged 34 and her 10-year-old daughter have been found inside freezing appliances in an flat in the western part of Austria.
The victims, a woman from Syria and her daughter, who had been unaccounted for for several months, were detected on the end of last week. The freezers were hidden behind a plasterboard wall in the apartment, situated in the city of Innsbruck.
Two individuals, a Austrian man, 55 and his 53-year-old brother, were detained in June. The elder brother, a colleague of the Syrian woman, informed authorities last week that there had been an unfortunate event—but denied homicide.
Informing reporters earlier, a representative for the state prosecutor announced the pair were being detained on "serious suspicion of murder".
Personal details of those concerned have not been released by law enforcement, in following local legislation.
The family's disappearance was originally brought to light by the female victim's relative, who resides in Germany, on 25 July 2024.
Investigators said the male associate told them at the time she had gone on an extended trip with her daughter to travel to her relatives in the nation of Turkey.
Her bank card was then found to have been used abroad repeatedly.
But when investigators examined the mother's apartment, her cellphone was discovered.
Someone also reported listening to a disturbing sound in the dwelling, and shouts of "mother" on the occasion the two were presumed to have gone missing.
A broader official inquiry was launched, with officers discovering several texts transmitted via the mother's device—among them a resignation letter to her employer and communications to the male colleague.
Law enforcement stated a amount in the thousands was also sent to the man.
Katja Tersch informed the press on Tuesday that a rented space had been rented out before the victims' disappearance and a cooling unit had been placed there.
The brothers took out the appliance from the facility on the very day the woman and her child disappeared, she revealed. And a seven days after, they purchased an additional appliance.
Investigators say they consider this suggests the fatalities were premeditated.
"The reason for their demise could not be determined due to the advanced decay of the remains," the official said.
The prosecutor's spokesman—from the legal authorities—noted the specific order of occurrences is still unclear, but the remains were carefully placed and were not found during a previous house search.
While the brothers were arrested in June, it was only on November 12 that the elder brother acknowledged an event and to storing the victims. He denies any plan to cause death, authorities confirmed.
In a related development, his brother admitted to a concealment but disputed involvement in a killing.
The brothers are currently in pre-trial detention in jails in separate locations, approximately 189 kilometers away from each other.
In a joint statement, the nation's official for women's affairs and Justice Minister stated the "alleged double murder... represents the abrupt and violent termination of two human lives and uncovers a cruel system".
"Females of all ages are being murdered due to the sole reason that they are women and girls," they went on to say.
"Murders of women are a profoundly embedded and society-wide problem that we must address decisively."
