A renowned South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the metropolis of Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country battling rampant crime.
Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.
Officials stated the forty-year-old entertainer was accosted by a trio of assailants, with one began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.
The reason behind the incident remains unclear and no suspects have been apprehended are in custody, according to authorities.
Law enforcement said that Stock was attacked as he was leaving a premises near the Carlton Centre.
He had spent several hours at the building managing the implementation of safety equipment, which had been controversially occupied by unknown people, as per local media.
"The report indicates the deceased was confronted by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before escaping on foot," a police statement stated.
Surveillance tape reportedly depicted a man with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what resembled a protective services outfit firing shots on Stock before fleeing.
The DJ tried to run away after he was shot but succumbed to his injuries on the opposite side of the road.
It was further revealed that Stock had an weapon on his person and no items were stolen during the assault.
Key evidence, like cartridges, were found at the scene.
Officials are asking anyone who saw the event who may have have information to come forward.
"Our information indicates they walked a long distance after the attack, and officers have been following their trail to determine their location," remarked an authority figure.
His family member, Nicole Stock, said the loved ones are reeling to understand the tragedy.
"I am in shock. I don't have words," she said.
"We know he was a representative for countless citizens. He was a fearless commentator about topics not many people were willing to tackle. This is a tremendous loss."
She urged the community to refrain from sharing explicit content from the incident, saying this was an extremely painful time, especially for Stock's three sons.
Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a television program that premiered on a South African TV network.
Apart from his role as a presenter, Stock was active in various business ventures, including security provision, supplying elite guarding services and securing high-profile events across South Africa.
He was also said to be engaged in real estate operations and was involved in property reclaimations.
His murder has shocked the country and led to an outpouring of tributes from his fans, the government and political parties.
A senior figure said he was outraged and heartbroken by Stock's murder.
"He was forthright without fear or favour. He even spoke up against me and my actions as a minister. He was a shining model of who we ought to be," he stated.
A party figurehead stated the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a shock for all South Africans".
A industry leader said that "Stock was more than just a TV personality. He was a skilled narrator, a true devotee of sound and a generous spirit who brought joy and energy to every appearance. His commitment to his craft left an indefinable mark."
In a release, the network he worked for said Stock was known for his presence, kindness and quick humor, adding that his legacy "will live on".
