New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities released surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries were reported.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.

He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was projected as an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
