James understood his monumental run of putting up 10+ points was threatened. When it mattered most, however, it didn't concern him.
The right decision involved passing the ball – so he did. With that selfless act, the unprecedented record finished.
LeBron's staggering run of 1,297 consecutive NBA regular season games with 10+ points ended during a recent game, when the league's career points king finished with a mere eight points in the Los Angeles Lakers' 123-120 win against the Toronto Raptors. He delivered the game-winning assist, finding teammate Rui Hachimura to knock down a triple as time expired.
“Zero,” James replied in response regarding the conclusion of his run. “We won.”
James could have sought to clinch the game – while also extending the streak – in the closing seconds, yet he opted to dish the ball to his teammate stationed in the corner. Hachimura sank it, prompting James celebrated immediately.
“Just playing basketball correctly. Make the right play,” James noted. “That’s just been how I operate. That is the way I was taught to play. That's what I've done throughout my career.”
“LeBron is acutely aware exactly how many points he has at all times,” stated the team's head coach the coach. “He did it just as he has throughout his career.”
LeBron checked back into the game one last time with just over five minutes left, the result and his personal record both hanging in the balance. His tally was a mere six points from 3 for 15 from the field by that point.
He managed a basket at under two minutes remaining to knot the score but then missed a 14-footer at one minute to go that would have taken him to ten points.
He avoided taking one more attempt – though the opportunity was there. Austin Reaves gave James the ball as time wound down, but James opted to make the extra pass instead.
The spirits of the game, if you do it correctly, they tend to reward you,” Redick stated.
This incredible run started back in January 2007. It was easily the longest such streak the league has ever seen: MJ had 866 consecutive double-digit scoring games, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had 787, and The Mailman recorded at 575.
LeBron is such an unselfish player,” said teammate Jake LaRavia.
He focuses on playing the game of basketball. He could have shot but because of who he is on the court and just who he is off the court, he executed the unselfish play, passed it to Rui and we won the victory.”
Scoring in double figures was usually a guarantee well before the fourth quarter began. Over the course of the record, he had attained the 10-point mark by the beginning of the final quarter on the vast majority of occasions prior to Thursday.
However, two such single-digit games after three periods took place just days before: He had nine points going into the fourth against Dallas on 28 November, followed by six points going into the fourth against Phoenix earlier in the week.
LeBron was able to preserve the record in the Phoenix game. The very next outing, it concluded – but he still rejoiced regardless.
My focus is to make the best play. That is instinctive, regardless of outcome,” James affirmed. When you make the right play, the game gods consistently rewarding me.”
