Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 individuals perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain under care, with a number in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
