GOP members in California filed a federal lawsuit this Wednesday, challenging a high-stakes redistricting measure that could shift as many as five House seats for Democrats.
The measure, the ballot measure, was approved by voters Tuesday night, representing a decisive victory for Democrats. This arrangement grants on a temporary basis the power to draw electoral boundaries to the California legislature, allowing it to adopt district maps that are expected to assist Democrats pick up five seats in the House of Representatives.
The plan is a direct response to gerrymandering in Texas, where GOP lawmakers, following the US president's direction, have created a number of new districts favoring Republicans.
