New York City Mayor Eric Adams revealed his decision to back Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, even after an extended period of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.
Just last month, the mayor had lashed out at Cuomo, calling him a āsnake and a liarā and accusing him of having āa history of pushing Black candidates out of races.ā However, in a new development, Mayor Adams reversed course, announcing he now intends to support Cuomo in neighborhoods where he holds strong support.
āI think that it is imperative to mobilize the communities of color that have been affected by gentrification on how vital this election is,ā Adams remarked.
The mayor further explained, āResidents have seen their rents increase due to neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those areas, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with community leaders and groups and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them motivated.ā
The election battle has so far been dominated by the struggle between the former governor and democratic socialist his main rival, whose rise in the polls has drawn interest globally and symbolized aspirations for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democrats.
During a recent mayoral debate, both Mamdani and GOP candidate his conservative opponent stated they would reject the mayor's support if extended.
Months ago, Adams had begun his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in return for his assistance with federal immigration raids across New York City.
At an unrelated press conference on Thursday, Adams answered reporters inquiring into the endorsement plan by stating, āI'm meeting Andrew this evening.ā
The announcement came a day after the two politicians were spotted sitting courtside together at the New York Knicksā first game at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a heated mayoral debate.
