Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this charming family navigate their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
